Fred Marsh

Valley Falls’ Major League Pioneer

Born in Valley Falls on January 5, 1924, Fred Marsh remains a source of pride for our community as the only known athlete from Valley Falls to reach Major League Baseball. From the ballfields of small-town Kansas to the brightest stage in professional baseball, Marsh’s journey is a testament to determination, discipline, and hometown grit.

A gifted infielder, Marsh made his Major League debut in 1949 and went on to play seven seasons in the big leagues. During his career, he suited up for the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox, and Baltimore Orioles. Known primarily as a dependable third baseman, he earned respect throughout the league for his versatility, work ethic, and steady presence on the field.

Before achieving his baseball dream, Marsh served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, returning home to continue the career that would eventually carry him to the majors. His story reflects the values that define Valley Falls — hard work, humility, perseverance, and pride in community.

Though decades have passed since he last stepped onto a Major League diamond, Fred Marsh’s legacy continues to inspire athletes and residents alike. He proved that even from a small Kansas town, extraordinary achievements are possible.

Today, we proudly honor Fred Marsh as one of Valley Falls’ greatest athletic ambassadors — a hometown hero whose legacy will forever be part of our community’s history.
